The excitement surrounding the Cleveland Browns hiring Mike Pettine as head coach must be tempered by the thought that the team went through this process just last year with Rob Chudzinski.

While Pettine is collecting compliments from his work as the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator, he hasn't served as a head coach since 2001, when he led a high school team in Pennsylvania.

Fans have to believe that Pettine will have a little more job security than Chudzinski because another one-year dumping of the coach would be almost unthinkable.

The Browns' head coaching search was long and embarrassing, but if Pettine turns out to be the next Buddy Ryan or Bill Cowher, it will be worth all the trouble.
