After the Cleveland Browns’ exhilarating victory over the Buffalo Bills, the team had to deal with the fact that quarterback Brian Hoyer is out for the season with a torn ACL.
Hoyer crumpled awkwardly to the ground after a sideline hit by the Bills’ Kiko Alonso. Brandon Weeden, the starting quarterback in Game 1, returned from his own thumb injury to lead the Browns to victory.
On one hand, Freeman threw for over 4,000 yards last season. On the other, he could not co-exist with Tampa Bay head coach Greg Schiano.
Freeman would be a good idea because the Browns need depth at quarterback. While Jason Campbell is a capable backup, the Browns threw him to the bottom of the pile when they elevated Hoyer from third stringer to starter.
Freeman also has to prove he is not the reason for the Buccaneers’ slow start. Sometimes a change of scenery is all that is needed.
Finally, Freeman needs to play for a new contract. His deal expires this year, and he needs to show NFL teams that he’s still got it, so he can cash in next season. Matt Flynn only started one game for Green Bay in 2011, and he signed a multi-year deal for more than $20 million.
The Browns need to hope that another team – perhaps even Buffalo, who fell apart when E.J. Manuel got hurt – doesn’t sign Freeman first.
The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot is reporting that the Browns aren’t interested in Freeman. But if Weeden goes down with an injury – and he’s already been hurt once – Freeman shouldn’t be surprised to hear the phone ring.
