“The Other Guys” was a movie starring Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg about cops who were out of the spotlight. The Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins will do battle on Sunday with two quarterbacks who will try to avoid being “The Other Guys.”
Brandon Weeden of the Browns and Ryan Tannehill of the Dolphins (pictured) were first-round draft picks at quarterback last year, but the Colts’ Andrew Luck and the Redskins’ Robert Griffin III grabbed all the glory.
As the teams kick off the 2013 season on Sunday, Weeden and Tannehill will try to show that they, too, have what it takes to be franchise quarterbacks. However, only one can grab that all-important first victory.
Weeden looked great in the first two preseason games against the Rams and Lions before coming back to Earth against the Bears. He will be missing wide receiver Josh Gordon due to a two-game suspension.
That means the pressure will be on wideouts Greg Little, Davone Bess, Travis Benjamin and Josh Cooper, along with tight end Jordan Cameron, to keep the chains moving.
Of course, Trent Richardson could take a ton of pressure of Weeden if he has a big day carrying the ball. After watching all of his backups get injured or released, Richardson knows he will have the team’s running game on his shoulders.
Miami has a strong defensive line led by Cameron Wake, but the Dolphins’ secondary is vulnerable.
On the other side of the ball, Tannehill will be missing one of his main weapons, as tight end Dustin Keller is out for the season with a knee injury. However, he still has former Steelers wideout Mike Wallace, who will battle Browns cornerback Joe Haden in an important individual matchup.
The Browns’ defense needs to stuff the Dolphins’ running attack to force Tannehill into a position where he will have to play the hero.
Cleveland was 5-11 last year, leading to the hiring of head coach Rob Chudzinski. Miami was 7-9 under Joe Philbin, who is starting his second year in charge of Miami.
The Browns will take on the Dolphins at 1 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium.
