When the 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game rosters were revealed Sunday evening it was a pleasant surprise to see that the Cincinnati Reds would have four participants in the Mid-Summer Classic. Pitchers Johnny Cueto and  Aroldis Chapman along with position players Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco will represent the organization on July 15th at Target Field.

"We've had some challenges early in the year, but we're playing well. We've had some guys that have had excellent seasons," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We've got some guys who haven't been named for the club that I hope will get some consideration if there's room on the roster with injuries or issues with starting pitching. It was great for me, personally, but certainly impactful and a great moment for the players involved."

Cueto, 28, will be making his first All-Star appearance. In 18 starts this season the right-hander is 8-6 with a 1.99 in 131.1 innings pitched. He has pitched three complete games and has collected 130 strikeouts. He leads the National League in innings and opponent batting average and is second in ERA and and strikeouts.

Chapman, 26, is making his third appearance for the Reds after begin selected as a participant in each of the last two seasons. The big right hander missed time earlier this season after being hit by a line drive during Spring Training but has bounced back and recorded 17 saves in 24 appearances. In 24.3 innings pitched he has struck out 47 batters and has recorded a 2.55 earned run average.

Frazier, 28, is also making his first appearance. This third-baseman from Toms River, New Jersey is having a carrer year batting .288 with 17 home runs and 47 RBIs. He leads all third baseman in the National League in home runs, slugging percentage, stolen bases, and extra-base hits.

Mesoraco, 26, is making his first appearance and has wowed fans for just half the season. The catcher has missed significant time with two stints to the disabled list but has still managed to hit .307 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs. He also had a streak in late June of hitting home runs in five straight games.

The four Reds recipients and the rest of the National League All-Star will join the 33 selected American League All-Stars in the 85th Mod-Summer Classic on July 15th at Target Field in Minnesota. The final spot on each roster will be chosen by a fan vote.
