On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, and Arizona Diamondbacks were involved in a three-way trade that saw Ryan Hanigan get shipped off to Tampa Bay along with Heath Bell and the Cincinnati Reds received David Holmberg. Arizona received Justin Choate and a player to be named.
Hanigan, who was believed to be the odd man out after the Reds agreed to a contract with veteran catcher Brayan Pena, then signed a three-year, $10.75 million contract with the Rays.
"This gives Mesoraco the opportunity to develop into a No. 1, frontline catcher that we think he can be," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "Pena will be a quality backup and good bat off of the bench. It gives Devin the chance for more playing time."
Hanigan batted just .198 in over 70 appearances last season. Mesoraco, who will finally get a chance to be an everyday catcher, was the 15th overall pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft.
Holmberg, who comes to Cincinnati after spending much of the past two seasons in Double-A Mobile, is a 22-year old lefty starting pitcher. He went 5-8 this season with a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts. In the lone Major League appearance of his career, Holmberg pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs, six hits and three walks.
