Cincinnati Reds, Bryan Price Announce 2014 Coaching Staff

As the new manager of the Cincinnati Reds, Bryan Price finally made the first big announcement of his tenure. Today he announced the club's Major League staff for the upcoming 2014 season.

Earlier this offseason, Price announced the hiring of bench coach Jay Bell, hitting coach Don Long, and pitching coach Jeff Pico. Today Price announced Mack Jenkins has been named as the bullpen coach, Steve Smith will serve as the first base coach and Freddie Benavides will join the coaching staff as well. First base coach Billy Hatcher and catching coach Mike Stefanski will remain with the team in the same roles. 

Jenkins, 48, served as the assistant pitching coach last season for the Reds. He has been with the club for 24 seasons. Jenkins also played for Cincinnati after he was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 1986. He pitched in the minors for three seasons as both a starter (23 starts) and a reliever (39 apps.).

Smith, 61, has been around professional for almost four decades. He's spent time with the San Diego Padres (1984-19890, Seattle Mariners (1991-1999), Texas Rangers (2002-2006), Philadelphia Phillies (2007-2008), and most recently the Cleveland Indians (2010-2012).

Benavides, 47, has been in the Reds' minor league system for the past 15 years. He played in the majors from 1991-199 with the Reds, Colorado Rockies, and the Montreal Expos. During he 2003 season, Benavides served as a coach of the Reds towards the end of the season. This year will be his first full year in the Majors.
