In his seventh season as a Major League Baseball player, Joey Votto continues to be one of the best hitters in the game today. His patience and eye at the plate continues to get him on base and help the Cincinnati Reds win games.
For the first time in his career, Votto did not miss a game this season appearing in all 162 contests. His 135 walks led the Majors- the next closest player, Shin-Soo Choo, only had 112. His on-base percentage of .435 ranked second in the Majors only behind Miguel Cabrera (.442). He was named to his fourth All-Star game this season and was the starter at first base.
Defensively, Votto had the worst season as a professional, but that's only if you're looking at the numbers. He committed 14 errors, the most of his career, and recorded the lowest fielding percentage as well. However, not only did Votto set a career high in innings played, he had 1245 putouts and 154 assists, both rank second since 2007.
After having arthroscopic knee surgery last year, Votto had a rough time getting back to his old self. However, he looked much more comfortable this year. After another off-season and Spring Training, I see no reason why his knee shouldn't be back to normal- if not better than ever.
With that being said, it would not surprise me to see Votto have number similar to those he had during his MVP season in 2010. He set career high in numerous categories and I think he may get close to those numbers yet again. He will continue to be one of the best hitters in the game and thankfully he will continue to be a Cincinnati Red since signing a 10-year, $225 million contract in 2012.
