Since his debut in 2009 with the San Diego Padres, Mat Latos has shown that he is a bright young star. The 25-year old from Alexandria, Virginia looks to be the next ace of the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff.
In his two season as a Red, Latos has recorded two consecutive 14-win seasons. This season was almost identical to his prior season with Cincinnati. He started 33 games last year and 32 this year, and pitched just two-thirds of an inning more this season. He dropped his ERA from 3.48 to 3.16, gave up 12 less home runs, and allowed seven less earned runs. He did allow 18 more hits than a season ago and batters hit .247 this year compared to .230 a year ago.
Unfortunately for Mat, at times, the offense failed to help him pull out wins. He had to deal with four straight no decisions to begin the season. In the games that he did have a few insurance runs, he made the most of them.
With Johnny Cueto's nagging injury, no one is sure his status for next year, which gives Latos the perfect opportunity to become the ace of the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff.
It seems he's continues to work on his mechanics and gets stronger and stronger each start. With that being said, I predict Latos will most likely start 34 or 35 games and end up with at least 16 wins, if not more. Additionally, I think he has a great shot to compete for the NL Cy Young Award.
