After spending the past eight years in the American League with the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians, Shin-Soo Choo was shipped over to the National League by the Indians in a three team trade that included the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Cincinnati Reds. Luckily, it was the Reds who landed the 31-year old, South Korean born outfielder.
Choo exceeded the production that former Reds center fielder Drew Stubbs had the few seasons he was Cincinnati. He finished the season batting .285 with 21 home runs and 54 runs batted in (RBI) to go along with his 20 stolen bases and Cincinnati Reds record 26 hit-by-pitches. He also recorded his highest on-base percentage of his 11 year career (.423).
As the season went on, many questions arose as to whether the Reds would look to resign Choo or not. In February, Choo avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $7.3 million dollar deal with the Reds.
The season progressed and those questions still hadn't been answered. The last month of the season, Cincinnati called up speedster Billy Hamilton who made his name known throughout the league with his base stealing ability.
Unfortunately, Choo looks like one of the few players from this years team whose spot on next year's roster seems to be up in the air. The Reds have a lot to think about with Billy Hamilton doing as well as he did along with the price it would cost to keep Choo as an everyday center fielder for at least another year.
Personally, I would like to see Choo back on the roster for another year just to be sure that Hamilton's growth continues. He's been one of the better Reds leadoff hitters in the past few years and would be a huge loss to not have him there again next year.
