Just two days after being eliminated in the National League Wild Card Game, Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker was fired after six years of service.
The decision, which was made by Reds chief executive officer Bob Castellini and general manager Walt Jocketty, came after Baker led the Reds to 90 wins in three of the past four seasons.
"We thought about it and it was something that we just saw the club the way it was trending and playing lately, that something wasn't right and change was necessary," Jocketty said. "We felt it was the right thing to do to talk to Dusty before he left town and not let him get home and call him or bring him back."
The Reds had several opportunities near the end of the regular season to take control of the first wildcard spot or even take the lead in the NL Central. At one point, with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Reds were tied for second place just two games behind division leader St. Louis. Unfortunately, the Reds went on their longest losing streak all season and lost six straight.
"I think it was disappointing," Jocketty said. "We won 90 games but we really controlled our own destiny at the end there. That one final playoff game may have been different if we ended up playing at home."
