Just when you thought the race for the postseason couldn't get any bigger, the Pittsburgh Pirates are set to come to town in a battle of wild card positioning. The Pirates own a one game lead on the Cincinnati Reds for the top National League Wild Card spot.
Both teams fell on Wednesday, the Reds to New York (NL) and the Pirates to the Cubs. Each club will have an off day before the Bucco's travel to Cincinnati for a pivotal three-game series.
Cincinnati has won six of their last nine and have split the overall season series with the Pirates (8-8).
Pittsburgh, who are three games back of St. Louis, still have an opportunity at the division title.
"We're still focused on the opportunity to win the division," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Wednesday. "If it turns out that way that the division is gone, we want to fight and take that Wild Card Game back home."
Homer Bailey and A.J. Burnett will be on the hill for Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, respectively. When Bailey has pitched against the Pirates this season, the Reds are winless while Burnett is 1-1 against the Redlegs.
"We need to play well against the Pirates," Reds reliever Sam LeCure said. "Not only so we can secure home field for that Wild Card Game. We also want them to question whether they are able to beat us."
The winner of the series will take the top spot in the National League Wild Card and will host the one game playoff set for next Tuesday.
