Joey Votto entered Friday's game hitless in his last 13 at-bats and was batting just .153 since August 26. But things changed Friday as Votto reached base safely in all four at-bats going 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and two walks as the Cincinnati Reds snuck past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 at Great American Ballpark.

With the Reds trailing 2-1 heading into the fifth, Votto's two-run bomb put the Reds ahead for good. Reds starting pitcher Mike Leake led off the inning with a walk, and was followed by a base hit off the bat of Shin-Soo Choo. Brandon Phillips then grounded into a double play but he was followed up by Votto's blast.

"That's what the big boys do," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "You can't hold a good man down too long, especially such a talented man and a determined man."

The Dodgers jumped ahead early on Leake with two runs in the first. Yasiel Puig collected a one-out single and Hanley Ramirez later brought him around with a two-run shot of his own to left field.
Leake settled down after and ended his outing retiring 20 of the final 23 batters he faced.  He lasted seven and two-thirds innings allowing five hits and two earned runs. He didn't surrender a walk all night.
Manny Parra pitched the final out of the eighth before closer Aroldis Chapman entered in the ninth and struck out the side to finish off the Dodgers.
The win brought the Reds record to 80-62, just two games out of first place and a game and a half out of second. Mat Latos is the scheduled starter for game two.
