Missed opportunities were a common theme in last nights 16 inning affair between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals. Twice the Reds had opportunities with runners on to take the game with a walk-off win but failed to bring him around.
Matt Adams, who launched two extra-inning home runs, took Logan Ondrusek deep in the 16th inning to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead, which was the eventual final.
Reds starter Bronson Arroyo, who went seven innings giving up seven hits and three runs, said the five-hour game was hard fought.
"It could have went either way. Both teams gave away some good opportunities, and they capitalized on one more than we did," Arroyo said,
Cincinnati had their best opportunity in the bottom of the 15th after Shin-Soo Choo led off the inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Phillips, Joey Votto grounded out to put Choo on third with two outs. Jay Bruce was intentionally walked and Chris Heisey came to the plate. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Heisey attempted a bunt but was unsuccessful and Choo was caught off of third base and eventually thrown out.
"You're not going to lay a squeeze down with two outs," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Heisey, he thought the third baseman was back. He was bunting for a hit, and Choo was trying to score. It looked like he didn't see the ball go past him, and by then you're in no-man's land because he was trying to score."
They capitalized in the 14th after Adams hit his first home run of the night. Ryan Ludwick pinch-hit to begin the inning and led off with a single to center. Speedster Billy Hamilton was called upon yet again and came through with another stolen base. On the next pitch, Zack Cozart singled to center to bring home Hamilton to tie the game at four.
"That was just a character win," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "The guys just kept grinding, not giving up or giving in. The job the young bullpen did holding them down was impressive. That's one of those wins you don't forget. Adams has been so good all season for us in different positions. He's got that kind of power."
Cincinnati had an opportunity to pull within a half game of the Cardinals and two games of the Pirates. The final game of the four game series is scheduled tonight for 7:10 ET.
