Most teams would be less than excited to face-off against a Cy Young candidate like Adam Wainwright, but it seems like the Cincinnati Reds roster lights up when they see his name on the starting lineup.
After rocking him for nine earned runs in only two innings on August 28, the Reds collected ten hits and six earned runs off of Wainwright as they topped the Cardinals 7-2 this afternoon at Great American Ballpark.
It didn't take long for the Reds to strike. Shin-Soo Choo led off the game with a single to left and was sacrificed over by Brandon Phillips. Joey Votto then grounded out and Jay Bruce walked to put runners on the corners. Ryan Ludwick, who had collected RBIs in three of the last four games, singled home Choo to put the Redlegs up 1-0.
After the Cardinals were retired in the second, the Reds came up looking for more. Todd Frazier led off the second with a ground-rule double to right-center. Zack Cozart brought him around with a single on the first pitch of his at-bat. After a sacrifice bunt by Reds starter Mat Latos, Choo tattoo the second pitch he saw into the seats in right-center field for his 18th home run of the year.
Cincinnati starter Mat Latos allowed two runs in the top of the third inning but hunkered down for the remainder of the game. He allowed two runs on four hits while throwing his first complete game of the season.
The Reds added run in the third and fourth thanks to a Frazier RBI single and a solo home run by Votto.
They also added a run in the eighth after Bruce walked with the bases loaded.
With the win, the Reds pulled within two and a half games of the second place Cardinals but stayed three and a half back of the NL Central leader Pittsburgh Pirates.
Game two is scheduled for tomorrow as Homer Bailey will be on the mound for Cincinnati looking for his tenth win of the season.
