Brandon Phillips went three-for-five including a solo home run, triple, and double while driving in two runs and scoring three to help Cincinnati Reds starter Greg Reynolds pick up his first win this season as the Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-3 at Coors Field Saturday night.
With the win, the Reds pulled within two and a half games of the Cardinals after they were defeated earlier in the evening by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who took sole possession of first place.
Cincinnati jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Shin-Soo Choo led off the game with a walk and was brought around by a Phillips triple. He scampered home after the next batter, Joey Votto, grounded out to the shortstop.
"You always want to score first, especially in this ballpark," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "And keep scoring, because you never know when they're going to come back.
Phillips extended the lead to 3-0 two innings later after he launched a 1-0 fastball from Rockies starter Juan Nicasio over the center field wall for his 17th homerun of the season. The RBI, which gave him 99 on the season, bested a career-high for Phillips.
"It felt good to beat a career high," Phillips said. "I'm just glad we got the win for the team, because we really need to get some more Ws."
Two more innings later, the Reds tacked on three more runs. After Cincinnati loaded the bases, Choo was able to score on a Niasco balk followed by a two-run single by Ryan Ludwick.
After the Rockies plated their first run in the bottom half of the inning, Votto singled home another run pushing the score to 7-1 in favor of Cincinnati. Both teams plated runs in the eighth and after all was said and done, the Reds came out on top, 8-3.
Reynolds, who made his first appearance against the team that made him a first-round pick, went eight strong innings allowing seven hits on three earned runs. He also struck out five batters.
"That was an outstanding performance by Brandon and an outstanding performance by Reynolds," said Baker. "It was his first win as a Red."
The Reds and Rockies will face-off in the rubber match this afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 ET.
