The Reds opened up this important series against the Diamondbacks on a high-note with a 5-3 victory on Monday night moving them to a season-high 17 games over .500. The win also put the Reds up 6 games over the Diamondbacks, who are trying to scratch their way back into the wild-card hunt.
The Reds, who were returning home for the first time in 7 games, used a quality start by Bronson Arroyo and an offensive onslaught to beat Arizona. The first six Reds’ players in the lineup recorded at least one hit while posting at least 5 runs for the fifth time in seven games.
One of the best signs was the emergence of Ryan Ludwick, who got the goose egg out of his extra base hit and RBI columns for the year on an RBI double in the 4th inning.
“I actually felt better tonight than I felt yet,” commented Ludwick. “I don’t know if that’s being home, being in a familiar place. I actually felt like I had a chance tonight.”
Most of the Reds lineup seemed to be comfortable back at home. The Reds jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning when Zack Cozart followed Brandon Phillips’ triple with a sac fly.
The Diamondbacks tied the game in the top of the 4th inning on an Aaron Hill home run. The tied didn’t last long, however, as the Reds responded in the bottom half with four consecutive hits including Ludwick’s RBI double.
Third baseman Todd Frazier remained hot as he scorched his third home run the past seven games in the 5th inning.
The Reds bullpen followed Arroyo, who ended the night allowing three runs on 7 hits in six innings pitched. Arroyo also recorded six strikeouts while allowing no walks. The combination of Manny Parra, J.J. Hoover, and Aroldis Chapman threw the final three scoreless innings to preserve the Reds win.
The Reds will look to further their wild-card lead while continuing to put pressure on both the Pirates and Cardinals when they face off with the Diamondbacks again today.
