The three run first innings was all the insurance Mat Latos needed as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 4-2 to avoid the three game sweep.
The fireworks started early for the Cincinnati offense as Shin-Soo Choo led off the game with a home run, his 13th of the year. Zack Cozart followed him with a double and after Joey Votto struck out, Brandon Phillips launched his 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot that gave the Reds a 3-0 lead after the top half of the first.
The Reds added another run in the second thanks to a Cozart sacrifice fly that scored Xavier Paul.
The four run lead was all that Latos needed to cruise to his seventh win of the season. He went seven and two thirds innings allowing a single earned run on six hits. He also tied a career high in strikeouts with 13.
The Arizona offense was finally able to produce a run in the bottom of the eighth when Miguel Montero hit an RBI single to right field.
Aroldis Chapman, who blew the save last night, came in the ninth and although he allowed a run, was able to close the door on the Diamondbacks and help the Reds avoid a three game sweep.
Cincinnati will have a day off before returning to action in Oakland as they have a two game series with the Athletics.Tags: Aroldis Chapman, Baseball, brandon phillips, Cincinnati, Cincinnati Reds, Joey Votto, Mat Latos, MLB, Shin-Soo Choo, Xavier Paul, zack cozart
