In honor of yesterday’s All-Star Game, lets take a look at the Chicago Cubs’ ASG history. Similar to the Home Run Derby, which we discussed yesterday, the Cubs have made an impression on the All-Star Game as well, sending 87 different players to the mid-summer classic since 1933. Here is a list of the most decorated Cubs all-stars of all-time.
Ernie Banks – 14 selections
Ryne Sandberg – 10 selections
Ron Santo – 9 selections
Sammy Sosa- 7 selections
Billy Herman – 7 selections
Billy Williams – 6 selections
Gabby Hartnett – 6 selections
Don Kessinger – 6 selections
There are also a few Cubs who rank among the all-time best in ASG play. Ron Santo (20 ASG plate appearances) has the second best on base percentage ever at .500 and, former Cub, Alfonso Soriano’s three ASG home runs (tied for 4th all-time) helped him attain the highest slugging percentage in ASG history with 1.000 in 14 plate appearances (per baseball-reference.com)
The Cubs’ all-stars this year are inexperienced compared to the names above as Jeff Samardzija (who is ineligible for the game due to his trade to the American League) and Anthony Rizzo will be attending their first all-star game and Starlin Castro, who will be playing in his third ASG is 0-2 with a strike out in his ASG career.
