All-star weekend is underway and was highlighted yesterday by the Futures Game. As mentioned in a previous article, the Chicago Cubs top two prospects, SS Javier Baez and 3B Kris Bryant were selected to participate in the event. Bryant started for the USA team at third and went 0-4 but Baez made quite an impression coming off the bench for the World team. In the top of the 6th, Baez hit a monstrous opposite-field home run off of Washington Nationals prospect Lucas Giolito. Giolito threw Baez a curveball on the outer half of the plate but left it up in the zone and Baez took advantage. Check out the video here.
The Home Run Derby and the MLB All-Star Game often overshadow the Futures Game but it really is a great place to see the future stars of professional baseball. Many of today’s stars have participated in the Futures Game, such as Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout. So make no mistake about it, it is a huge honor for Baez and Bryant to have been selected for the event and hopefully we get to see them tear it up in the big leagues real soon.
