Justin Ruggiano has heard the call! For so long the Chicago Cubs offense has been kept afloat by the efforts of Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo, but it now looks like we can add Justin Ruggiano to the list. Ruggiano hit a monster home run yesterday and has been red hot as of late. In his last ten games, Ruggiano is hitting over .300 and has now homered in back to back games.
Last year Ruggiano hit .222 with 18 home runs for the Miami Marlins. The Cubs hoped that he could provide a similar punch to their lineup in 2014 but a slow start combined with a trip to the disabled list got Ruggiano off on the wrong foot. But starting with his 3-6, five RBI effort in Boston this week, it looks like he is finally settling in. Not only will having another bat in the lineup help the Cubs win, but it will also provide some protection in the lineup for Castro and Rizzo.
Justin Ruggiano doesn’t seem to fit into the Cubs long term plans as a starting outfielder but a solid second half could get him a new deal that lasts until the likes of Albert Almora and company arrive.
