Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is making huge strides this year. His play has improved so dramatically that he seems like a shoe-in to be chosen for the MLB all-star game in Minneapolis, MN. Few are truly surprised with Rizzo’s improvement but the fact that it’s really happening and happening now has gotten everyone excited.
(all stats are per baseball reference.com)
Here we are, not even half way through the season, and already Anthony Rizzo is within striking distance of his 2013 home run total. But the most impressive stat may be his WAR; in 2013 Rizzo had a WAR of 2.8 and already this year he is at 2.6. That means that Rizzo has nearly matched his value to the team from all of last year in just 76 games this year.
If Rizzo keeps up his stellar performance he may even wind up garnering a few MVP votes when the season is over. PETCOTA projections has Rizzo finishing the season with 32 homers, 92 RBI and a slash-line of .277/.373/.507. All would be career highs, except for doubles (40, 2013)
The bottom line is this: Anthony Rizzo is having one heck of a year, following his sophomore slump, and looks like he is well on his way to becoming a star in this league.
