The Chicago Blackhawks announced Saturday afternoon that they have acquired goaltender Jason LaBarbera from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for future considerations. LaBarbera will be assigned to the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.

LaBarbera, 33, has played in seven games for the Oilers this season where he has posted a 1-3-0 record. He has a goals against average of 3.28 and a .870 save percentage.

LaBarbera was most likely acquired for insurance as the team is already without its top two goaltenders in Corey Crawford and Nikolai Khabibulin. Crawford is at least two to three weeks away from returning, while it is unknown when or if Khabibulin will return. The Blackhawks are currently starting rookie goaltender Antti Raanta, while rookie Kent Simpson is his back-up.

Whether this move was to provide a veteran presence with the Blackhawks or not, it is a smart move for the short-term. Don't expect LaBarbera to steal the show in Chicago, but he could be called up soon to play in a few games.
