The Chicago Blackhawks lost 3-2 in a shootout last night to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Blackhawks had a 2-0 lead in the third period, but the Penguins fought back to tie it up, thanks to two goals from defenseman Kris Letang. The teams headed to a shootout and it was the Penguins who came out on top. The Blackhawks are now 3-0-2 in the preseason and have one game remaining.
Although they lost the game, the Blackhawks were without several of their star players and the Penguins played all of theirs. Bryan Bickell led the way for the Blackhawks, scoring both of the Blackhawks' goals. His first came shorthanded, assisted by Brandon Pirri and Johnny Oduya. His second goal came on the power play from Jeremy Morin and and Mike Kostka. Bickell's power play goal was the Blackhawks first power play goal of the preseason.
Nikolai Khabibulin was in net for the Blackhawks and he looked good as he stopped 31 of 33 shots. One major stat from the game that really stands out is the Penguins winning 38 of 62 face offs. With Jonathan Toews and others out of the lineup, the Blackhawks relied on their rookies in the face off circle, but were outdone.
The Blackhawks final preseason game isn't until Saturday, so the team will have lots of time to prepare. You can expect to see a similar lineup on the ice as the team will likely rest most of its stars again.
In other news, the team announced more roster cuts today. Drew LeBlanc, Terry Broadhurst, Phillip Danault, Byron Froese, Kyle Beach, Antti Raanta, Brad Mills and Maxim Shalunov have all been cut and will report to the Rockford IceHogs. The team also announced that they have placed Brad Winchester and Theo Peckham on waivers. With these recent moves, the Blackhawks now sit with 26 players consisting of 15 forwards, nine defensemen and two goaltenders. They have to get down to 23 before the start of the regular season.
We will be sure to keep track of any updates as the team finalizes its roster. The Blackhawks will take on the Washington Capitals in Chicago on Saturday at 7 pm CT. The game will be televised on CSN-Chicago.
