Not even a week after becoming the 2013 Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks are in the midst of getting ready for the NHL draft. With the upcoming season having a salary cup reduction, the Blackhawks will look to have a good draft in order to make up for lost pieces via trade or free agency.
The Blackhawks hold the 30th pick in Sunday's draft. After their pick in the first round, the Blackhawks don't make a selection until the fourth round. They lost their second and third round picks in a trade they made for defenseman Johnny Oduya. The Blackhawks then make selections in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds of the 2013 NHL draft.
Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman will have his work cut out for him as he tries to add depth and talent to a Stanley Cup roster. With the potential of losing forwards Bryan Bickell, Michal Handzus, and Viktor Stalberg, Bowman may elect to take a forward with the team's first pick. However, there are still a lot of players that could fill the void. The most logical selection would be a defenseman as you can never have too many good defenseman. Also, Nick Leddy is a restricted free agent and Michal Rozsival is an unrestricted free agent. The Blackhawks could potential lose both players this offseason and will need to replace them.
Another option for the Blackhawks in this draft is to make a trade. They probably won't be trading up higher in the draft, so a more plausible option would be maybe to trade back in the draft. Based on the Blackhawks recent track record on draft picks, whatever decision they make will surely be a good one.
