Signs are pointing toward Carolina Panthers rookie running back Kenjon Barner making his NFL debut against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

According to Steve Reed of the Associated Press, Ron Rivera is optimistic about Barner's chances of suiting up. The Panthers head coach says he plans to use the former Oregon Duck as a "scat back" – much like the New Orleans Saints use Darren Sproles.

"He's a guy with great hands out of the backfield," Rivera told reporters. "He's an elusive runner when he gets the ball in his hands. He has home run potential out in open space and that's where you have some tough matchups."

With Jonathan Stewart sidelined until at least Week 7, capable veteran DeAngelo Williams has carried the ground game through the first month of the season.

Barner looks to become a dynamic complement to Williams, who is already off to a hot start with 291 rush yards through three games.

An ex-track star with 4.4 speed, Barner is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. However, he must address well-noted issues with pass protection and ball security before the Panthers can trust him with an expanded role in the offense.

Barner will have his work cut out for him on Sunday against the NFL's second-ranked run defense. The Cardinals are conceding just 75 yards per game – an average of three yards per carry – on the ground this season.
