The Carolina Panthers were awarded another draft pick on Monday, a compensatory sixth-rounder (no. 207 overall), giving the team a total of seven picks in April's upcoming NFL draft.
The Panthers were awarded the pick because they signed two free agents last year – defensive tackle Ron Edwards and kicker Olindo Mare – and lost three – quarterback Matt Moore, tight end Jeff King and cornerback Richard Marshall.
The Panthers also added more depth on their offensive line last week, singing guard Mike Pollak as an unrestricted free agent. Pollak, who has started 40 career games in four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, will likely compete for a starting role on the offensive line. The Panthers released Travelle Wharton this offseason, who was a long-time starter at left guard, but re-signed Geoff Hangartner, last season's starter at right guard.
In other news, NFL super agent Drew Rosenhaus, who happens to represent Jeremy Shockey, has said that he is doubtful that the veteran tight end will be in a Carolina uniform next season.
“The door's still open (with the Panthers). We're still talking,” Rosenhaus said today. “But I think it's more likely that he would be on another team this year.”
Shockey, who is entering his 11th NFL season, caught 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers last season.
