After a first period that saw the Ottawa Senators out battle the Buffalo Sabres, the Sabres reversed the tide during the second period.
"Since we've been here, we have to compete," said Interim Coach Ted Nolan.
The Sabres had several solid scoring chances in the first period, but failed to capitalize on any of them. Robin Lehner , starting in place of Craig Anderson, made several impressive saves to keep Buffalo off the score sheet. The Senators had several power play chances that could have blown the game wide open. The Sabres penalty kill was excellent tonight, killing off all four Ottawa power plays.
"We had some penalties there. We've been in that situation before," said Zemgus Girgensons.
The second period started with Buffalo picking up the pace. Numerous shots and scoring chances led to several close goals. A goal was disallowed after two different reviews by the officiating crew.
"We found a way," said Steve Ott. "We have seen a consistency in the compete level from game to game."
The Sabres battled in the third period, but failed to score. After an intense overtime, the two teams went to the shootout. Each team had eight skaters aside, with Ryan Miller besting Robin Lehner and giving the Buffalo Sabres the victory.
The Sabres next play on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa.
A tightly played third period yielded nothing in the goal department. Both goalies stopped countless point blank shots in front of the net.
