The Buffalo Bills had their first multi-goal effort in three games Saturday, but that was still not enough to propel them past the Montreal Canadiens.
The Habs used a three-goal second period to earn a 3-2 decision over the Sabres. The loss extended Buffalo's slide to 1-7-1 in its past nine games.
An uneventful first period saw nine combined shots taken and no goals. But the Canadiens only needed 19 seconds of the second period to get on the scoreboard, with Brandon Prust beating Jhonas Enroth from in front of the net. Tyler Ennis tied the game eight minutes later, one-timing a loose puck from the faceoff circle past Carey Price. The goal was Ennis' second in teh past two games.
But two goals in the period's final four minutes did Buffalo in. Tomas Plekanec converted a tic-tac-toe passing play from in the slot at 17:44, and then Alex Galchenyuk doubled the Habs' lead a minute later.
Zemgus Girgensons got Buffalo back within a goal four minutes into the third period, taking an Ennis pass and breaking in on Price. He wiped out but still pushed the puck in. Buffalo could not score again, though, despite outshooting Monteal 8-4 in the third period and 25-19 for the game.
