As the Buffalo Sabres continue on in the 2013-14 season changes are being made. After last night’s embarrassing loss to the Anaheim Ducks, fans and spectators are beginning to wonder if the executive decisions to the roster are good for the team.
Right wing, Patrick Kaleta, was placed on waivers November 2nd and cleared the day after. General Manager Darcy Reiger states,
“This was a move we thought was necessary to help Pat change his game and preserve his career in this league. We believe in Pat as a person and we hope he will continue his career in our organization and, if the circumstances are right, with the Buffalo Sabres.”
Kaleta was drafted by the Sabres in 2006 and played eight seasons with the team. Kaleta’s role as a penalty killer for the Sabres will not go unnoticed considering he has been number one for the team the past two years. His absence may be a disadvantage for team even though it will be a learning experience for the individual player. That was a choice the organization was forced to make for the Sabres.
Another questionable move made by the Sabres was the trade of long-term team member Thomas Vanek. The left wing played nearly 600 games for the Sabres and scored a total of 254 goals during that time. He was traded for New York Islanders Matt Moulson, who has appeared to be an asset to the Sabres. NHL veteran, Steve Ott, maintains a positive outlook on Vanek’s trade and his own position with the Sabres. He states,
“There’s no hard feelings and we wish him the best of luck. Right now I’m still on this team and I’m going to play my heart out like I will be here forever.”
One factor the Buffalo Sabres is not lacking, is heart. However, let’s hope that the enthusiasm of the team is enough to overcome the poor direction coming from the leaders of the organization, and this team can turn the season around.
