When the news broke Sunday night that Thomas Vanek had been traded, fans feared the worst was upon the franchise.
Matt Moulson's debut with the team may help those wounds heal a little bit.
Moulson scored twice in his debut, and his play drew the praise of Buffalo captain Steve Ott.
"We know Matt's resume," Ott said after last night's game. "He's got a phenomenal resume already and it's only going to get better. He's got great hands around the net. The scoring area's around that 10-foot crease and what a way to come into your first game and score two big ones."
Moulson finished with two goals on three shots and was a plus-2 in his debut with the Sabres. The way he worked in the game is what stood out and impressed Ott.
"I like his work ethic," Ott said. "He worked hard. He brought an element to that line, with Cody (Hodgson) there and it seemed like there was some chemistry… He's a special talent, and that's why we acquired him."
Moulson's work ethic and production so early in his time with the Sabres not only impressed Ott, but also had a positive impression on head coach Ron Rolston.
"He's a hockey player," Rolston said. "He's a hockey player, like in every zone, he's solid. In our zone, D-zone, he was solid, Plays his position, gets pucks out on the wall, makes little plays through the neutral zone, gets to the net, give-and-go plays. He's a hockey player. That's all I can tell you. He's good and we're glad we have him."
Moulson's play certainly takes the sting out of losing Vanek, who stated he didn't want to be apart of the movement in Buffalo after his trade. It also could prove that the Sabres got the better end of the deal. Vanek wasn't known as a defensive player, but more as an offensive talent, and a defensive liability. He put up numbers for the Sabres, boasting the No. 5 rank on the franchise's all-time goal list. But Moulson may be better suited for Buffalo, especially now that the Sabres are rebuilding.
Granted, it's only one game, one performance, but this isn't a Steve Bernier-type of situation. Moulson has produced in the past, posting 30+ goals in each of the three seasons before the lockout. Hopefully for Sabres fans, he's the spark the team needs to get on a roll.
