With this season being an obvious rebuilding season, it's hard to imagine the Buffalo Sabres being a legitimate playoff threat. However fans feel they deserve a better effort than they've been given.
Tyler Myers says he and his teammates agree.
"I don't take it personally," Myers said of the negative fan reaction during home games. "We certainly can understand their frustration. We've had a rough go here to start the season."
The Sabres have endured plenty of backlash from their fans early this season, and with good reason. Buffalo has won just one of their first nine games and have looked quite terrible for a good chunk of it. The Sabres didn't get their first shot on goal until the 14:10 mark of the first period of Saturday night's game, to which the crowd returned possibly the loudest Bronx cheer in the history of sports. However, despite the team's struggles, Myers remains optimistic that they can turn it around.
"It's a process," Myers said. "It's a process getting out of a down time and it's going to be a matter of working hard and being smarter. It's never easy in this league. There's lots of ups and downs, and right now we're trying to get out of a down."
While the Sabres continue to try to get out of their slump, fans have gone beyond suffering. The team has yet to lead in a game, and has had continuous slow starts, which have been attributed to lack of preparation. The way things are going, there seems to be no end in sight for this slump, and fans have made their feelings known.
"It's tough to hear sometimes, but certainly we can understand their frustration," Myers said.
That frustration boiled over after Ron Rolston's snarky comments after another loss Saturday. He seemed as if he had no answers, and resorted to snapping at the media to make up for his inability to lead his team, and fans recognized it right away.
One thing that remains certain, is that the road to recovery will not be easy for Buffalo. They will host the Boston Bruins Wednesday on national television, and most likely in front of another hostile home crowd.
