The Buffalo Sabres lacked a fast start once again and it proved costly as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Colorado Avalanche tonight.
The Sabres looked dead to the world until, ironically, Colorado scored to make it 3-0. The Sabres seemed to have a jump in their step, but couldn't climb back from such a high deficit.
"We're going to have to address our preparation coming into a game, our focus and our will to win battles," Tyler Myers said after the loss. "It's unacceptable. It's starting to get pretty ridiculous and that's something we really have to break."
Preparation seemed to be the key word after tonight's loss. Sabres head coach Ron Rolston was particularly annoyed at the team's lack of preparation, but offered no suggestions on how to fix his team's slump.
"We've got to figure it out together," Rolston said. "We've got to do a better job with obviously our preparation. in terms of being prepared. Again, a lot of our (veterans) are out there to start a hockey game. So I think preparation is the first thing you look at and focus on what we need to do to win a game."
It's obvious that Rolston is in over his head right now and has no answers to Buffalo's struggles. It's also obvious what the team needs to do in order to start winning games, and that's work.
"I think our third period was definitely one of the best periods we've played so far this year," Myers said. "Being down two goals late, I think that gives our (defensemen) a little bit more leeway to take a little more risk and try to push the puck. But our big concern needs to be playing a 60-minute game. The way we're starting games right now, we're not going to give ourselves much chance to win."
The Sabres worked the entire third period, and they were awarded for it when Marcus Foligno scored early in the stanza. Buffalo continues to apply heavy pressure, but were unable to get any closer. The crowd did acknowledge their effort, with loud, genuine cheers after good shifts. This is contrary to their reaction to Buffalo's first shot on goal, which came at the 14:10 mark of the first period, and was sarcastically applauded, loudly.
The Sabres have a few days off before they host the Boston Bruins Wednesday. Hopefully for Buffalo fans, Rolston and his crew will have some sort of answer for the joke happening in Buffalo right now.
