After eight games of the Buffalo Sabres' season, Nick Kypreos from Sportsnet in Canada claimed that the team was going to fire general manager Darcy Regier today.
The Sabres have refuted the report, telling WGR 550 that there is "zero truth" to the report.
The Sabres are in an obvious rebuilding state, and their record (1-6-1), shows this. However, the team is executing Regier's plan to rebuild, and firing him now just doesn't make sense, no matter how much fans want him gone. The fact is, anytime a team is rebuilding, there will be "suffering," as Regier pointed out at the end of last season.
The Sabres did get into the win column for the first time of the season last night with a gutsy 4-3 shootout victory against the New York Islanders, where the Sabres finally were able to get pucks into the net. Really, that's the one thing missing from the team this season. The defense has been shaky, but good enough and their goaltending has been excellent. If Buffalo can get its goal scoring on track, the team can rebound with a respectable season considering the rebuild.
Now, back to Regier. The knock on him lately is that he has been in Buffalo far too long without success, or to narrow the term down, a Stanley Cup. Fans have been calling for his head long before this season's terrible start, and seeing as though Ron Rolston doesn't even have enough games under his belt to makeup a full season, Regier, again, is the scapegoat. However, if the Sabres intended on having Regier on a short leash, he wouldn't have made it into the season.
A rebuild is going to take time. The Sabres have a specific plan in place to build through the draft and they've done so, nicely. Buffalo has a very talented core of players, but they're young. Perhaps, too young to win much right now. The fact is, fans are going to have to deal with Regier for the foreseeable future, because Terry Pegula and the Sabres organization have put their trust in him to rebuild the team and get it back to a contending position.
