Buffalo Sabres Get First Win of Season, Best New York Islanders 4-3 October 15th, 2013 at 11:50 PM

The monkey is officially off the Buffalo Sabres' backs.
Marcus Foligno tied Tuesday's game against the New York Islanders with two minute left in regulation, allowing the Sabres to eke a 4-3 shootout win in Nassau Coliseum. The win let the Sabres (1-6-1) avoid the worst start in franchise history.
The Sabres came back from three one-goal deficits in total. Frans Nielsen opened the scoring for New York in the first period. Tyler Ennis evened the score in the second period for Buffalo, but the Islanders took the lead back minutes later when Matt Martin redirected a Casey Cizikas pass from behind the net past Ryan Miller. Thomas Vanek tied the game again before the second period ended, though, on a Thomas Vanek power play tally.
The Islanders seemingly claimed the momentum for good in the third period, when Matt Moulson deflected a John Tavares shot past Miller on the power play with 11 minutes left. But Marcus Foligno scored his first of the year on a shot from near the blue line in the final 2:30 of the third period.
Miller kept Buffalo in the game by making 44 saves, including two key saves on point blank shots in overtime. He made two other saves in the shootout, with Vanek and Ennis netting shootout goals to get the win.
Buffalo did itself no favors, winning for the first time while playing the second of back-to-back games and playing on the road.
"I think the emotion of the game helped (jn terms of fatigue). Guys took it to heart of where we're at and got it done," coach Ron Rolston said.
Buffalo hosts Vancouver on Thursday.
