The Buffalo Sabres are trying to bring the NCAA Frozen Four back to Buffalo for the first time since 2003.

The Sabres are co-sponsoring a bid by the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference to host the college hockey championships at the First Niagara Center some time between 2015 and 2018. The MAAC also wants Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills, to host the NCAA lacrosse quarterfinals in the same time frame.

The Sabres will have their HARBORCenter ice rink/hotel project ready then and figure to use it and the tournament to further springboard Buffalo's hockey reputation.

"We've very proud of the resume we've built hosting large-scale sporting events," Sabres President Ted Black said. "Our ability to cater to the demands of big events will only be accentuated with the arrival of HARBORCenter next year. Buffalo is well-known for being a sports-crazy town, especially in hockey, and our facilities will soon rival any across the country. It would be an honor to bring the Frozen Four tournament back to Buffalo and to watch hockey thrive in the best possible setting."

All three games Buffalo hosted in the 2003 Frozen Four sold out. Sabres draft pick Thomas Vanek was the tournament's most valuable player as his Minnesota Golden Gophers won the title.

Buffalo is set to host the second and third rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament this coming spring. Buffalo has hosted that tournament four previous times this century, selling out every time.
