Buffalo Sabres Keep Winless Streak Going with 2-1 Loss to Chicago Blackhawks October 12th, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Ryan Miller kept the Buffalo Sabres
in Saturday's game long enough to give his team a chance. As has been the case all season, though, his teammates could not take advantage.
Miller made 38 saves – including 35 in the first two periods – to keep Buffalo within two goals of the Chicago Blackhawks. The Sabres only got one of those goals back, though, despite playing probably their best period of the young season in the final frame of Saturday's 2-1 loss.
As has been the case essentially the entire season, the Sabres were outclassed early. Chicago got 20 first-period shots on Miller, with only a Ben Smith shot from the point getting past Miller. Buffalo only got six first-period shots as nearly the entire period – including the Sabres' only power play of the stanza – was spent in Buffalo's end.
Buffalo didn't look too much better in the second period. Chicago managed 17 more shots in the second, with Patrick Kane sniping a shot from the right faceoff circle past Miller in the final few minutes. Buffalo did test Corey Crawford a bit more in the second, getting 10 shots.
Crawford had to excel in the third period to earn the win. He stopped 11 Buffalo shots, with only a Drew Stafford rebound shot getting past him. He stood tall in the end to get the win. Buffalo's defense also greatly tightened up, holding the Blackhawks to three shots.
Cody Hodgson got his team-leading fifth point of the year by assisting on Stafford's goal. the line of Hodgson, Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott combined for 16 of Buffalo's 28 shots on the night.
The Sabres fall to 0-5-1. Chicago improves to 3-1-1. Buffalo next hosts Minnesota on Monday.
