The Buffalo Sabres have dropped to 0-3 this season, but it certainly isn't due to lack of goaltending.
The Sabres have scored just two goals in the first three games, both of which came after the team was already down 2-0. The goaltending they've received thus far has been excellent, but the team knows they need to provide some goal support if they plan on being competitive this season.
"There's room to improve in a lot of areas and we just have to come together as a group," Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller said after Buffalo's 1-0 loss against Ottawa on Friday. "It's apart of the process here and a young season and you have to stay positive, and true to the plan here."
After that game, which was Buffalo's best game of the young season, the Sabres dropped a stink bomb in Pittsburgh. Jhonas Enroth started that game, and was under fire from Penguins shooters all night, as Miller had been for the first two games. However, despite the turmoil the team seems to be in, Miller expects the group to improve.
"We'll clean thing up, but for the most part, I think our positioning and certain things are better than it was in the last few years, so there's a good foundation there," Miller said.
The foundation Miller is referring to mostly younger players, with a sprinkle of veterans who aren't stepping up for the team right now. Drew Stafford has been a no-show, most likely because his contract status isn't on the line. Thomas Vanek has scored just one goal this season, but has had plenty of chances. Buffalo's passing has been more in the skates than it has on the sticks, which is causing a problem in the transition game.
The Sabres will hope to break this miserable streak early this season on Tuesday, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Buffalo could really use Marcus Foligno, who was injured in the preseason and has yet to suit up for a regular season contest. Foligno is a physical presence that can also contribute offensively, which is something the Sabres desperately need.
