If Saturday is any indication of how the Buffalo Sabres will respond to adversity, then the 2013-14 season will be even longer than fans expected.
The Sabres did manage to end a 122-minute scoreless streak in the third period, but they were already down three goals at that point and ended up losing 4-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Buffalo only managed 21 shots a day aver getting shut out by the Ottawa Senators and appeared largely uninterested in playing.
Jhonas Enroth got the start a day after Ryan Miller's 44-save performance and yielded a goal only 3:39 into the game when Sidney Crosby deflected a puck past him. Chuck Kobasew doubled the Pittsburgh 10 minutes later and kept Enroth busy. The goalie made 19 saves through two periods to keep Buffalo – which got only 14 shots in the same span – in the game.
Chris Kunitz scored the insurance tally 10 minutes into the third period on a penalty shot. Thomas Vanek scored Buffalo's goal – its second in three games this season – five minutes later off a Cody Hodgson feed. But Craig Adams closed the scoring with an empty-netter in the final two minutes.
Buffalo went 0-for-2 on the power play and is now 0-for-12 for the season with the man advantage. Marc-Andre Fleury got the win in goal for the Penguins, who have allowed only one goal in their first two games.
Miller did not dress Saturday. Team officials cited a minor groin issue that should not prevent Miller from playing Tuesday. Matt Hackett was called up to back up Enroth Saturday.
Buffalo next host Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
