Everyone knows that preseason means nothing when it comes to a team's overall rank in the league. Once October hits, everyone resets to zero and teams begin the long, hard fought press to the playoffs through the grueling 82 game season.
The most common example of the preseason meaning nothing would be the Detroit Lions form the 2008 NFL season. Detroit went 0-16 in the regular season, but went 4-0 in the preseason (beat the Bills in Week 4). Again, preseason means nothing.
But what about hockey?
The Sabres are on a tear this preseason and, unlike in the NFL preseason, they don't need to cut 20+ players to make their roster. By now, most fans know who will stay in Buffalo and who will be first back when there's an injury. Largely, this is our team.
Will that continue on into the regular season? All teams are in the same boat as Buffalo. Most teams know who will start and who will be sent back to juniors or the minors.
So far, the Sabres are an impressive 4-1-1 with their only regulation loss coming against Toronto. To suggest that a team could keep that pace through an 82 game season isn't that far out of the question. That would put the Sabres north of 50 wins, a total that some teams see more often than others. It's a feat that most teams have accomplished in their history and a feat that will most likely be seen this season.
If the Sabres are going to keep their momentum going, they may want to finish preseason strong against the Hurricanes on Friday night. Before they know it, captains will be named, rosters will be set, and the team will be facing off in Detroit for the season opener.
