WWKB AM 1520 relaunched late this week as ESPN Buffalo. The station is owned by Entercom, which also owns the primary sports talk station in the city, WGR 550 AM. That station is the flagship station of the Sabres and Buffalo Bills, ostensibly making 1520 another arm of the teams' broadcast operations.
"Buffalo is a passionate sports town and the appetite for sports programming on the radio keeps growing. With WGR 550 AM and now ESPN Buffalo 1520 AM, Entercom Buffalo has expanded our ability to offer the best and most comprehensive local and national sports coverage to Buffalo sports fans, giving our clients and advertisers even better access to the total Buffalo sports audience," said Tim Wenger, the station's operations manager.
The station is the second new sports talk station to open in the market this year. In the spring, 1270 AM rebranded as The Fan to counter WGR. It carries CBS Sports Radio except for "The Jim Rome Show," which still airs on WGR. The Fan offers a local talk show during that time. It also airs University at Buffalo football games.
ESPN Buffalo will broadcast Buffalo Bisons baseball games starting next year. It will also broadcast the remaining Sabres' games in the tournament, at 4 p.m. today against the Carolina Hurricanes and a final game Monday to be determined. Buffalo won the first game Thursday over Columbus, 3-2.
WGR already airs ESPN radio late nights and weekends when it isn't airing local content. But the move also gives Buffalo listeners access to Colin Cowherd's and Scott Van Pelt's shows, which air during "Sabres Hockey Hotline" and "Schopp and the Bulldog," respectively, on WGR.
