Mark Kiszla spoke to the rumor that's gained steam lately, a straight-up trade of Miller for center Paul Statsny. He said both teams would gain from the move. Each player is entering the final year of his contract and would seem to be in need of new options, he said;
"Colorado has a surplus of centers, and no matter if you love the steady play of Paul Stastny or find him a ho-hum performer on the ice, it has become increasingly difficult for this team to justify his $6.6 million salary."
Miller will make $6.25 million in 2013-14 while playing a five-year, $31.25 million deal. He sold his Buffalo home during the 2013 season and has remained stoically noncommittal when speaking about the future. But the 33-year-old said he's not opposed to staying:
"I'm not closed off to the possibility. I understand the situation in the NHL," said Miller, who said he's yet to be approached about an extension beyond 2013-14 by the Sabres. "There's not a lot of goaltending jobs, and they're getting filled up by long-term contracts. I'm not going to try and close too many avenues at this point."
The Avs are bare-thin in net. They have the aged Jean-Sebastian Giguere and Semyon Varlamov in net, neither of whom seems capable of carrying them long term.
The 27-year-old Statsny was Miller's teammate on the 2010 U.S. Olympic hockey team. He had nine goals and 15 assists in 40 games last season. He's scored at least 20 goals in each full NHL season he's played in. Miller is coming off a career-worst season that saw him go 17-17-5 with a 2.81 goals-against average.
