Mikhail Grigorenko will remain a Buffalo Sabre.

The team confirmed Tuesday morning the 18-year-old rookie will not be returned to juniors and will stay with the Sabres, thus forfeiting his amateur status. He has yet to post a point through five games but played his best game in his last outing against Carolina and is getting more ice time each game.

"The ability to continue his development, in conjunction with his ability to help us win hockey games. Those two things really make it up," GM Darcy Regier cited as the team's reasons for keeping Grigorenko.

He will be joined in tonight's lineup against Toronto by Thomas Vanek, who returns after a one-game absence due to a muscle strain. But a lower body injury will force defenseman Robyn Regehr out of the lineup. Blueliner Alexander Sulzer has also been scratched for undisclosed reasons, allowing Mike Weber and T.J. Brennan to both make their season debuts Tuesday after being healthy scratches all season so far.

"The way the schedule is, Mike gives us a little more of a physical presence, so we need to get him in," coach Lindy Ruff is.

Ruff said Regehr's injury is believed to be short term.
