To the surprise of no one who in any way follows hockey, the National Hockey League on Monday canceled all games through Dec. 30 as its labor impasse with the players union continues.

The lockout, which began in September, has now claimed 526 regular season games, 42.8 of the 2012-13 season. The Winter Classic and All-Star Game will also not be played this year.

The NHL and NHLPA, meanwhile, may get back to the bargaining table this week, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. Three days of late-night negotiations last week fell apart last Thursday, with the union saying a deal was close but the league criticizing the union for spreading false hope and not taking the process seriously. Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller was among the players taking part in last week's labor talks.
