One Buffalo Sabres prospect advanced in the quest to join the American national junior hockey team, but another was cut from camp Tuesday.
Sabres 2012 second-round draft pick Jake McCabe was one of 11 defensemen to make the cut halfway through Team USA's training camp at Lake Placid. The roster was cut from 45 players t 34 in advance of the rest of camp, which runs through Aug. 11 and includes several international exhibition games.
"The first three days of camp have been impressive and we have been pleased with the players' level of competition," said Jim Johannson, USA Hockey's assistant executive director of hockey operations and the general manager of the 2013 team. "For the players retained, this week's upcoming international games in Lake Placid give us an opportunity to further assess their skills."
Among the 11 released players was Logan Nelson, a center who was Buffalo's fifth-round pick in 2012. The 18-year-old played last season with the Victoria Royals of the WHL.
The camp is coached by former Sabre Phil Housley.
