Buffalo Sabres’ Andrek Sekera Scores Game-Winner in Slovakia’s 4-2 Upset Win Over U.S.

Buffalo Sabre Andrek Sekera scored a third-period goal Monday to make the difference in Slovakia's upset 4-2 win over the United States in the opening round of the IIHF World Championships in Finland.

 

Sekera took a rebound early in the period and beat Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings to make the score 3-1. Paul Statsny of the Colorado Avalanche narrowed the gap midway through the period on a five-on-three, but a former Sabre - Miroslav Satan – iced the game with a late empty-netter.

The other Sabres in the tourney, Jhonas Enroth, has a 2-0-0-0 record with a 2.50 GAA for Sweden, which has won its first three games.

The loss dropped the Americans' record to 1-1-0-1 (five points), while the Slovaks improved to 1-0-0-2 (three points). Canada leads their group with a 2-0-1-0 record (seven points). Four games are left in the opening round for the Stars and Stripes, witht he next one taking place at 9 a.m. against Belarus.
