The Buffalo Sabres surrendered two goals in the game's final four minutes Saturday to lost a home game to the FLorida Panthers, 3-2.
Despite holding an 8-5 shots advantage in the first period, the Sabres failed to score in the stanza – but so did their opponents. Matt Ellis did put the puck in the net near the halfway point of the period, but he did so with his skate, thus nullifying the tally.
Marcel Goc opened the scoring for Florida in the second period, sliding the bad-angle shot past Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller near the seven-minute mark. The Panthers largely controlled play throughout the second period, but Thomas Vanek was able to tie the game with less than two minutes to go in the second, as his deke laid out Florida goalie Jose Theodore, which allowed Vanek to go arond the net and bury the puck in the opposite side. The Panthers outshot the Sabres 13-6 for the period, but Miller stood his ground to keep the blue and gold in the game.
The Panthers again seized control of the action for much of the third period, but Miller played well, making 10 saves by the 12-minute mark. The Sabres eventually capitalized on the strong defense, as Jason Pominville scored a power play goal on a Brad Boyes to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead with seven minutes left. But the Panthers tied it on a Tomas Fleischmann goal with four minutes left, and then Florida's Jason Garrison blasted a shot past Miller with 1:43 to go, giving his team the win.
The Sabres will now break until Wednesday, when the Philadelphia Flyers come to the First Niagara Center for a 7:30 p.m. game that will be televised on Versus.
