Buffalo Bills’ Kiko Alonso Named NFL Rookie of the Year by Football Writers

Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso was named NFL defensive rookie of the year Tuesday by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Alonso was omitted from the Pro Bowl despite finishing 2013 with 159 tackles, third in the NFL, and four interceptions, tied for the team lead. He played every defensive snap of the season and led fan voting for the Pro Bowl among linebackers.

Alonso will have to wait until Feb. 1 to see whether The Associated Press names him its defensive top rookie. he's the first Bills linebacker since Shane Conlan (1986) to win a defensive rookie honor from either of the organizations.

Alonzo was a second-round draft pick last April.
