The Buffalo Bills hung with the New Orleans Saints for most of yesterday's game, but needed to be far closer to perfect to have any chance to win.
Buffalo's defense, despite giving up more than 30 points for just the second time this season, did its job early. The unit stopped Drew Brees and his high-powered offense with a short field on the Saints' first possession after a Thad Lewis fumble, and a missed field goal ensued.
The Bills had chances to pull even with New Orleans, but penalties doomed them. The Bills had an interception called back on a facemask penalty on Mario Williams late in the first half. The drive would end in a touchdown for the Saints and the Bills would go into the half down 21-10. The Bills would never recover.
Thad Lewis has showed signs of life, but also had plenty of ball security issues. He lost two fumbles and threw an interception in the game, all of which proved costly for Buffalo. Lewis appeared to have been injured badly on the first fumble, which occurred on Buffalo's first play from scrimmage, but came back into the game to try to lead his team. He showed he is able to make plays and convert long distances, but his turnovers were really one of the differences in the game.
The fact is, very few people expected Buffalo to win this game, and most likely the same amount expected them to barely show up. The Bills played a decent game given the circumstances, but just fell short by committing a few too many mistakes. This season is not a season where Buffalo will end its playoff drought. But the way they played showed there is plenty of life in Buffalo, and good things will be coming in the next few years.
