The Buffalo Bills have promoted practice squad quarterback Thad Lewis to the active roster and named him the starting quarterback against the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday.
Lewis will bypass Jeff Tuel on the depth chart this week, after Tuel proved to be inept against the Cleveland Browns Thursday in relief of injured starting quarterback EJ Manuel. Lewis is a mobile quarterback that may serve Buffalo's offense better than Tuel, who can be considered more of a pocket passer.
With Lewis making his Bills debut Sunday, the running game and defense will need to step up to help him excel. Buffalo's defense has been opportunistic for most of the season, but failed to create a turnover against the Browns Thursday night. The Bills did, however, get a good performance out of their running backs. CJ Spiller dashed for a 52-yard touchdown, and Fred Jackson scored twice on the ground. Tashard Choice also ran hard, and was able to gain yardage against a tough Browns defense.
Lewis will have a tough task at hand. The Bengals beat the Patriots Sunday, holding Tom Brady to no touchdown passes. The first time any team has done so in more than 50 games. Granted, that game was played in hurricane-like conditions, but the feat is still something to consider.
