Powell had a 45.5-yard gross average per kick for eight punts Thursday. but his inability to combine height and distance led to Travis Benjamin setting a Browns record with 179 punt return yards, including a 79-yard return for a touchdown. Powell shanked several other subsequent attempts to kick away from Benjamin, including a couple kicks of less than 30 yards.
For the season, Powell was averaging 46.1 gross yards per kick – but only 35.2 net yards per kick, the result of that inability to master every facet of the punting game.
The 24-year-old was drafted by Buffalo in 2012. he was cut during that year's training camp but joined the team in Week 4 of 2012, when the Bills cut veteran Brian Moorman. Powell played 18 career games with Buffalo, averaging 44.7 gross yards per kick over 100 kicks (38.3-yard net average per kick) with 33 landing inside the 20-yard line.
There's no word yet on a replacement. The Bills will host tryouts during this weekend in hopes of signing a punter by early next week.
